March 10, 2011
Salina The Basehor-Linwood girls trail Colby 18-16 at halftime in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament.
The teams traded buckets for the first four minutes and were tied at 3-3, 5-5 and 7-7 before Colby began attacking the basket off the dribble and surged to a 14-7 lead. A turnaround jumper by Megan Bergstrom in the closing seconds brought BLHS within 14-9 after one quarter.
Colby scored on its first possession of the second quarter when Katrina Kaus slashed to the basket for a layup, but the Eagles went more than six minutes without scoring another point as Basehor-Linwood switched to a zone defense that allowed them to contain Colby's speedy guards.
A 3-pointer by Courtney Poe, a Jamie Johnson free throw and a three-point play from Macyn Sanders brought Basehor-Linwood back to a 16-16 tie with 1:49 left in the quarter.
Kaus scored a well guarded layup with 41 seconds left in the quarter and gave her team a two-point halftime lead.
Poe and Megan Bergstrom lead BLHS with 6 points apiece. Kaus has 6 points and Mackenzie Curry has 5 for Colby.
