Live from Salina: Thoughts to ponder while waiting for tip-off

March 10, 2011

— It’s about 20 minutes until game time for the first round of the Class 4A state basketball tournament at the Bicentennial Center, and the Basehor-Linwood and Colby girls are on the court warming up.

An eerie feeling it setting in as I watch warm-ups. The Bobcat girls look just as calm and relaxed as they did before last year’s first-round game against Concordia, and just like the BLHS boys looked two years ago for their state opener against Wichita Trinity Academy.

It’s the boys comparisons that are striking — albeit completely meaningless in terms of how today’s game will go.

The Basehor-Linwood boys won the 2009 Class 4A state championship after entering state as the No. 6 seed, with four losses on their record and preparing to face an opponent — Trinity Academy — that won the 3A state title the year before and played a predominantly 3A and 4A schedule while BLHS played 4A, 5A and 6A schools.

Today, the Basehor-Linwood girls enter the state tournament as the No. 6 seed, with four losses on their record (they’re 18-4) and will face an opponent in Colby that plays mostly 3A and 4A opponents throughout the year. Meanwhile, the Bobcats have played a 4A and 5A slate this season while also taking on larger opponents from Missouri.

Colby enters with just two losses while Trinity Academy had just one loss when the BLHS boys played them in 2009.

Again, these similarities will have no impact whatsoever on today’s game, but they’re interesting to ponder while waiting for the next few minutes to pass and the game to begin.

The Basehor-Linwood state opener against Colby will tip at 3 p.m. Look for updates on this site, but to find more frequent updates please go to our Facebook page at facebook.com/thebasehorsentinel.
