Chieftain/Sentinel staff receives KPA honors
The Bonner Springs Chieftain, Basehor Sentinel and their staff members were honored this past weekend for work in 2010.
The Kansas Press Association handed out its annual Awards of Excellence during its annual convention Saturday in Junction City.
First-place awards went to: Melissa Treolo, Bonner Springs, education story; Chieftain staff, news and writing excellence; Cheryl Batrez, Chieftain ads, ad series or campaign; Chris Wristen, Basehor, sports story; Sentinel staff, best website and best front page; Kaitlyn Syring, Basehor, investigative story; and Matt Erickson, Basehor, government/political story.
Second-place awards went to Caroline Boyer, Bonner Springs, religion story; Nicole Kelley, Bonner Springs, education story; Chieftain staff, design and layout; Terrance Brown, Chieftain ads, specialty ad; Wristen, Sentinel, sports story; Nick Bratkovic, Sentinel, sports feature; Erickson, news, investigative, local business and government/political stories; and the Sentinel staff for best use of photos and news and writing excellence.
Third place honors went to the Chieftain staff for best website and best front page;
Brown, Chieftain ads, specialty ad; Matt Tait, Sentinel, for sports feature; Estuardo Garcia, Sentinel, news story; Benton Smith, Sentinel, youth story; and the Sentinel staff for design and layout.
The Chieftain and Sentinel were competing against other nondaily Kansas newspapers with up to 1,750 circulation.
