Tea room in Bonner closing
Area residents only have a couple more weeks to get their fix of Madame Hatter’s Tea Room’s tea, chicken salads, quiches and coconut cake.
Bonnie Freeland, owner of the downtown tea room, 228 Oak St., recently announced the business was closing in Bonner Springs, with the last day for the general public June 15. She said private parties would take place there June 16. June 21-25, the space will be open for a sale of several tea room items, including kitchen equipment, teapots and teacups.
The business moved in 2009 from Eudora to downtown Bonner Springs. Freeland, who lives in western Shawnee, would not discuss the reason for the closure, simply saying, “It’s just something that was kind of in the works for a while.”
John Helin, city manager, reported to the city council in a recent meeting the space may not be vacant for long. His report stated Freseros Mexican Restaurant, currently located a block north, was interested in moving into the space.
While the business is closing in Bonner Springs, Freeland hinted there may be some sort of future for it elsewhere.
“There are some other things we are working on, but nothing is confirmed at the moment,” she said.
