Letter: Skeptical of mayor’s intentions

November 22, 2011

To the editor:

“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark” is a quotation from Shakespeare's “Hamlet” and seems apropos considering what is happening in our town of Basehor.

An attempt is being made to recall the two council members who do their homework and watch the spending of our money. How convenient for the mayor. He gets to appoint their replacements (with the remaining council’s approval). Which relatives will he choose? He has two relatives on the council now, so with two more, the family could rule the city. Nepotism, anyone?

I can envision council meetings now. The mayor presents the agenda, which he has constructed. Four out of five council members rubberstamp it, and the meeting adjourns. Meetings would last 15 minutes at the most. Basehor goes further in debt, taxes go up to cover the deficit and all's well. Yeah, right!

Basehor

Editor’s note: Basehor Mayor Terry Hill says he is not related by blood to anyone on the City Council. Council member Travis Miles is the son of Hill’s wife’s sister. Thus, Hill is Miles’ uncle by marriage. Miles' aunt is married to a brother of council member David Breuer. However, Hill says he is not related to Breuer, nor is he related to council members Iris Dysart, Fred Box or Council President Dennis Mertz.

The editor's note has been changed to clarify the relationship between Travis Miles and David Breuer.

It is not considered nepotism for Mayor Hill's nephew by marriage, duly elected by the majority of votes to serve on city council. The real issue that I question is councilman Mertz cohabitating with Basehor city prosecutor Kiann McBratney. That is truly a question of ethics!

my what an active imagination you have, Marilyn. Have you considered writing facts instead of fantasy scenarios and something "someone" told you that the Editor has to correct?

I dont care if the entire Miles/Hill/Breuer family is on council! As long as a Mertz isn't! Miles/Breuer/Hill are all respected names in this city. Mertz is the neighbohood pest! Whether it is attempting his own car stops for speeding using a spot light in his front yard, or firing people without following proper procedures. He obviously thinks he is above the rules!

Follow The Yellow Brick Road To Nowhere Behind the curtain Jimmy the Wizard of Oz is pulling the levers and has sent Dorothy Dysart, Cowardly Lion Mertz, Scarecrow Moore and Tin Man Box out to get the broom of Elaine the Wicked Witch of the East after a house fell on her sister, Marilyn, the Wicked Witch of the West. Along the way they have created a $500,000 potential lawsuit for the Emerald City. Unfortunately in this story there are no ruby slippers. This little group, following Wizard Jimmy’s quest find themselves lost in the Dark Corners Forest with no Light.
Hopefully, the recall election will send all of them home and Emerald City will return to the beautiful, peaceful place that it once was. Let us hope and pray that the balloon full of hot air lifts off soon taking Jimmy the Wizard back to wherever he came from, gone forever from Emerald City.

Well Marilyn, I hope you are happy with you and your buddies who have managed to make Basehor a laughing stock across the state of Kansas!!!! You should be ashamed of yourself for starting this whole mess. I hope that we will one day heal from the damage that you have caused. You are pathetic and simple minded.
