Basehor golfers optimistic with state tourney veterans Vasquez, Dove returning
Bobcats’ top goal is qualifying team for state tournament
Basehor-Linwood golfers Marissa Dove and Nicole Vasquez have played in the Class 4A state tournament the past two years, and they have dreams of going back again.
This year, though, they want a little company at the season-ending tournament.
“We want to take a team to state,” BLHS coach Noah Simpson said. “The last two seasons we have taken individuals, but this year we want to extend that to the team.”
Simpson, who is in his second year with the Bobcats, said there was a lot of familiarity this season.
In addition to being more comfortable as BLHS coach, he also has a roster of experienced players.
“We return everyone from last season,” Simpson said. “This is a great group of people and hard-working kids. That is the best part.”
Practice began Aug. 15, and the Bobcats’ early practices have been filled with improvement.
“Practice has gone really well,” Simpson said. “Our focus has been a lot better than it was at this time last year. Our commitment to team goals is tremendous.”
The Bobcats’ roster figures to evolve each week with the players who are performing the best seeing varsity time.
In addition to Dove and Vasquez, Brooke Schler and Mariah Clayton are the team’s other top returners.
In addition, the squad includes Samantha Espinoza, Rachel Van Fleet, Candice Jennings, Julie Lough and Alison Kasick, Aubrey Green and Whitney Miles.
“I am really looking forward to this year and the success that we will have throughout the year,” Simpson said. “With our leadership and experience, we will be competitive in all tournaments and strive to reach the state level as a team.”
