KVL Football Report: Week One
The 2011 Kaw Valley League football season opened Friday night with the league’s two favored heavyweights claiming dominant victories while two others also looked impressive.
Two-time defending KVL champion Basehor-Linwood pounced on Piper early and never looked back in a 39-13 rout at PHS. Meanwhile, in another opening night match that was expected to be tight, Mill Valley repeatedly punished Lansing for turnovers and rolled to a 42-21 victory at Frank Graham Field. It was a rematch of the 2010 opener where Lansing scored late and claimed a one-point victory.
Tonganoxie — which had dealt with a tumultuous week as longtime football coach Mark Elston resigned amid controversy — brought closure to the week by crushing Bishop Ward, 34-6.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was Bonner Springs. Facing a non-league foe in Topeka Seaman — an opponent that beat BSHS 51-0 and 42-7 during the past two seasons — the Braves shrugged off an early deficit by scoring through the air and on defense. The Braves dominated the second half and claimed a 21-17 victory in the debut of coach Lucas Aslin. Most of the KVL coaches expected Bonner Springs to be a team that could make some noise because of its athletic players at skill positions, and — for one night at least — the Braves proved those coaches right.
Looking ahead, the marquee game in the league will feature Bonner Springs at Mill Valley. It will be the Braves’ KVL opener, and it will be a chance for them to see if they can put together back-to-back strong efforts against opponents who regularly advance to the Class 5A state playoffs.
