BLHS runners tested at Turner Invitational
After holding their own against mostly Class 4A competition for the first two meets of the season, the Basehor-Linwood cross country team took its first lumps of the year as it battled mostly Class 5A and 6A programs Wednesday at the Turner Invitational.
The BLHS boys finished fifth out of seven teams and the Bobcat girls placed sixth out of seven teams.
Brandon Lewis of Derby dominated the boys’ 5K race as he won in 16 minutes, 36, seconds a solid 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Ben Anstaett of Olathe North.
Jonathan Oliva paced Basehor-Linwood with a 10th-place finish in 18:07.
The remainder of the Bobcats’ first five were packed close together. Tanner Tavis finished 21st in 19:07, Mark Vitt was 25th in 19:14, Johnny Fulkerson finished 25th in 19:15 and Casey Jones took 35th in 19:43.
Gardner-Edgerton, which won the boys’ competition with 55 points, had six of the top 19 finishers. Olathe North finished second with 60 points and Derby placed third with 70.
Blue Springs (Mo.) had five of the top 17 runners and took first in the girls’ competition with 41 points. Julia Dury of Blue Springs was the 4K champion in 16:42.
Derby had five runners in the top 20 and finished second. Olathe North was third.
Quinnlyn Walcott led Basehor-Linwood with an eighth-place finish in 17:59 and teammate Ally Laney was close behind in 11th in 18:12.
Also for BLHS, Keirsten Lindelof was 32nd in 19:43, Hannah Tush was 40th in 20:36 and Haley Stallbaumer finished 41st in 20:42.
In the junior varsity boys race, sophomore Luke McGowan took second overall in 19:38, just two seconds out of first place.
Basehor-Linwood next competes at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Bonner Springs Invitational at the Kansas Speedway.
