Moran accepting applications for U.S. service academies

September 15, 2011

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., is now accepting applications for nominations to the U.S. service academies.

The applications are for spots in the 2012 freshman classes at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.

Selections will be based on SAT or ACT test scores, class rank, grade-point average, school records, extracurricular activities, leadership potential, motivation, recommendations and interview evaluations. Applicants also must meet these individual admission requirements of each academy to receive Moran’s nomination: applicants must show proof of residency in the state of Kansas; be at least 17 years of age but not past their 23rd birthday on July 1 of the year of admission; show proof of U.S. citizenship; be unmarried; and not be pregnant or have legal obligations to support children or other dependents.

The application deadline is Oct. 1, 2011. Applicants will be required to interview with Moran’s Academy Selection Board on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Kansas State University Student Union in Manhattan. The academies will make their final decision on who will receive an appointment of admission in early 2012. Those selected will enter the academies in June of 2012.

Application materials and additional information can be found at, or by calling Moran’s Olathe office at 913-393-0711.
