The Basehor-Linwood football team was efficient and thoroughly dominant while defeating Bishop Ward 60-0 on Friday in the Bobcats’ home opener.
They were so efficient and dominating, the starters played only the first half.
No starters from either team played in the second half. The two teams’ junior varsity players took the field with a running clock in play.
BLHS coach Steve Hopkins said the Bobcats accomplished what they had hoped.
“We went in with a goal to play at our level and worry about playing our best game,” he said.
Hopkins said the goal was to play his starters for the first half and then play junior varsity players in the second half. He was pleased with how his team performed and also that there were no injuries.
Basehor-Linwood’s defense was very good. The Bobcats had six interceptions and held Ward to just 3 of 14 passing. As a result, the Bobcats did not have a lot of long scoring drives because they were continually taking over with the ball in good field position.
On offense, Colin Murphy ran for four touchdowns on 50 yards rushing. He had an efficient performance throwing, too, completing 6-of-7 passes for 147 yards. He also caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Zac Hevel to make the score 49-0. Just before halftime, Caleb Hiss intercepted a pass and returned it 87 yards for a touchdown.
Running back Jesse Hiss also ran for two touchdowns. He rushed for 140 yards on six carries, including one 80-yard touchdown dash.
In addition, Ryan Murphy had three catches for 100 yards but no touchdowns.
BLHS led 28-0 after one quarter and 54-0 at intermission.
Hevel rushed for a touchdown in the third quarter to complete the scoring.
The victory against Ward marked the second consecutive performance where the BLHS offense has clicked on all cylinders. The Bobcats have thrived through the air and on the ground this season. Through two games, they’ve amassed 501 yards in the air and 481 rushing while scoring 99 points.
Basehor-Linwood next plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Lansing (1-1) in a matchup of two of the favorites to win this season’s Kaw Valley League title.
