Basehor-Linwood soccer routs Sumner Academy for third straight victory
Zach Ferguson and Lane Young each scored two goals Monday, leading the Basehor-Linwood boys soccer team to a 5-0 victory at Sumner Academy.
With the win, Basehor-Linwood improved to 3-2 on the season and ran its winning streak to three.
“I was a little nervous after a long weekend, but we came in and dominated from beginning to end against them,” coach Austin Knipp said. “I was really pleased actually.”
Basehor-Linwood played well on offense, moving the ball and creating good passing combinations throughout the game.
“Our forwards put the ball in the net and we kept pressure on their defense the entire game,” Knipp said.
In addition to Young and Ferguson, Trey Kincheloe also scored for BLHS.
Kincheloe’s goal came early and proved to be the game-winner. Ferguson scored his first before halftime and gave BLHS a 2-0 lead.
With a two-goal lead, Knipp told his players that he wanted the team to score another goal before halftime. Leading 2-0 at halftime can be a trap in soccer. Too often, Knipp said, he has seen when a team leads 2-0 at intermission and then gives up the lead in the second half. As a result, he is never comfortable with that score.
“One goal and the opponent can get right back into the game,” he said. “I don’t really know why, but 2-0 is always scary.”
The Bobcats alleviated any fears as Young scored just before halftime.
Young scored his second goal 15 minutes into the second half. With a 4-0 lead, Knipp put in numerous reserves.
Ferguson scored another goal with 11 minutes to play in the game.
Basehor-Linwood was back in action Wednesday against Mill Valley. Results were unavailable at press time.
With a three-game winning streak, Knipp said he is pleased with the progress his players are making.
“I am proud that these players are stepping up to the challenge, forming chemistry, moving the ball like I want them to and working hard every day,” Knipp said. “They are a great group of kids to be around.”
