Bonner mayor won’t seek sixth term
Bonner Springs Mayor Clausie Smith Monday announced he will not run for a sixth term.
Cities in Wyandotte County are now accepting candidate applications for those who want to run for this April’s elections, which includes the mayor and four council members in Bonner Springs and the mayor and two council members in Edwardsville. But Smith Monday announced at the Bonner council’s regular meeting that he will not seek re-election to extend his 10-year tenure as mayor.
Following the meeting, Smith, 75, explained the decision had nothing to do with his health; it is just “time to do something else.” He said he is proud of all that the city has accomplished during his tenure.
“It’s been a wonderful 10 years ... and I’ve loved it,” he said. “But there comes a time in everyone’s life where you have to give something up, and I decided this is the time.”
Prior to becoming mayor, Smith served as a council member for several years.
