Six Bobcats place in final wrestling tournament before winter break
Another week, another tournament to mark the strides taken by the Basehor-Linwood wrestling team in coach Tyler Cordts’ first season at the school.
The Bobcats placed ninth out of 19 teams with 101.5 points on Saturday at the Winter Wrestling Classic in Emporia, placing six of the 10 wrestlers it sent.
“This tournament was a great challenge for our team,” Cordts said. “We were right there in the mix with some of the top names in state, team-wise.”
It was at the same tournament last season that now-senior Cory McCleary gave the Bobcats their only place-winner. This time around, BLHS will enter winter break having placed more than five wrestlers in consecutive weekend tournaments.
Junior John Hopper (12-3) led the way on Saturday, placing second at 152 pounds. Senior Sam Seaton (9-3) and junior Stephan Struzzo (5-3) each placed third at 120 and 160 pounds, respectively. Struzzo went 4-1 on the day, rebounding from a first-round loss to win his next four matches with pins to place third.
“He had an awesome day,” Cordts said.
Sophomore Shayne Morris placed fourth at 106 pounds to improve his record to 10-5, and McCleary (8-4) and sophomore Zack Carter (9-6) rounded out the day with a pair of sixth-place finishes at 152 and 195 pounds, respectively.
The Bobcats will return to competition after winter break at the Dick Burns Mat Classic on Jan. 5 in Bonner Springs.
