Two inductees join BSHS Hall of Fame this week

February 15, 2012

The Bonner Springs-Edwardsville Education Foundation will induct two new members into its Hall of Fame this week.

The newest honorees are John Claxton, a 1973 Bonner Springs High School graduate, and Dale Taylor, a 1979 BSHS grad. The two will be officially inducted between Friday’s BSHS boys and girls basketball games against Tonganoxie.

The Hall of Fame began in 2006 and will have 18 inductees with Claxton and Taylor. To be nominated, in addition to being a BSHS graduate, nominees must have made a significant contribution to either their profession or the community at large and must be a citizen in good standing.

A plaque and likeness of each inductee is placed on the wall of the District PE Center.

Claxton is a lifelong area resident, and he still holds a BSHS school record in the pole vault.

He has become a member of the community through his church, St. Martin’s in the Field Episcopal Church in Edwardsville, where he volunteers and organized a new church addition.

Claxton also has served as a Cub Scout Den leader, soccer coach, and assistant track coach at the high school. He was self-employed in the HVAC business for 16 years.

But Claxton likely is best known for his work with the Bonner Springs Emergency Medical Service.

He began volunteering with the EMS department in 1981. He served 20 years as volunteer chief of the department and EMT, prior to becoming a paramedic and full-time, paid chief in 2001.

Taylor has lived in Bonner Springs since 1964. He lettered in football, wrestling and track while at BSHS.

Now an employee with Union Bank & Trust, he has served as a coach for the novice wrestling program, which runs December through March, for 30 years.

Taylor also is a 10-year member of the Bonner Springs Optimist Club, a former volunteer for the Downtown Bonner Association, a former board member of the Bonner Springs Parks and Recreation board, and a coach of local soccer, football and baseball teams. He has been a director of youth baseball/softball program in Bonner for the last 14 years.

Taylor also volunteers to help with maintenance at the McDanield Learning Center.

Taylor was the Bonner Springs-Edwardsville Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year in 2006.
