Yes, it's rivalry week. Bonner Springs is headed to Basehor-Linwood Friday for a double-header that will surely generate buzz. But just about all that'll be up for grabs will be bragging rights and a possible preview of a sub-state rematch later in the week.
Ask any of the teams' coaches and they'll tell you they'd love a regular season-ending win, but emerging injury free will likely be the priority on Friday with sub-state beginning Monday.
On Wednesday, the official sub-state brackets were released. Take a look at the draw below and share your predictions for what will be a busy week ahead.
- At 18-1, the Bonner Springs girls had all but earned the No. 1 seed in their bracket for awhile now. The Braves will host No. 8 Perry-Lecompton (5-15) at 7 p.m. on Monday.
- If No. 5 Basehor-Linwood (9-10) defeats No. 4 Piper (9-10) on the road Monday, then we could get a rematch of Friday's game less than a week later on Thursday, March 1. Piper has defeated the Basehor-Linwood twice this season — 34-31 at Piper and 28-20 at Basehor-Linwood. Should Piper pull off a three-peat against the Bobcats and Bonner Springs takes care of business, it will be interesting to see how the Braves perform in a rematch of their Jan. 31 27-26 thriller.
- Going into their Tuesday game at Turner, the Basehor-Linwood (16-3) boys still had a shot at a No. 1 seed, but needed help. Topeka-Hayden (16-3), who owned the tiebreaker on account of their Dec. 20 victory, would not be charitable. That said, a No. 2 seed is still good for a first-round home game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday as the Bobcats host No. 7 Perry-Lecompton (4-16).
- The Braves, winners of four straight entering Friday's game at Basehor-Linwood, will also open sub-state play at home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. No. 4 Bonner Springs (15-4) will host No. 6 Bishop Ward (4-15), a team it just defeated on Tuesday, 77-54. Should Basehor-Linwood and Bonner Springs win Tuesday, we'll get a rivalry rematch on Thursday, just six days after their season-ending matchup.
So, what do you think? Who has the best chance to go all the way in each bracket? What do you think about the Braves and Bobcats possibly playing again just six days after ending the regular season against each other?
