Ferro, McCleary still alive at state wrestling tourney
February 24, 2012
Salina Neither of Basehor-Linwood's state wrestling participants will be bringing home a gold medal, but that doesn't mean their season is over.
Bobcat grapplers Antonio Ferro and Cory McCleary both bounced back from first-round losses to advance to the second day of competition Friday at the Salina Bicentennial Center.
Ferro, a senior, dropped an 18-3 decision to Colby's Dustin Reed in the first round of the 120-pound bracket. However, Ferro regained his composure and earned a 3-1 win over Circle's Zeb Elson in the consolation round. Ferro can reach the third-place match with three wins on Saturday. The road starts with Chase Cole of Chanute.
McLeary, a sophomore, lost 6-0 to Colby's Quade Woofter in the opening round of the 145-pound bracket. He avoided elimination with a 12-4 consolation victory over Wellington's Jason Haydon. McCleary must also win three matches to medal on Saturday. He'll open Saturday's competition against Buhler's Scott Whitson.
Saturday's action will begin at 9 a.m.
