Basehor-Linwood at state wrestling tournament
Basehor-Linwood wrestlers Antonio Ferro and Cory McCleary recently competed in the Class 4A state tournament in Salina.
Salina Both of Basehor-Linwood’s state qualifiers reached the second day of state tournament competition, but unfortunately, neither could battle his way to a medal.
Antonio Ferro and Cory McCleary, the Bobcats’ only two grapplers to earn a 2012 state bid, each entered Saturday with a chance to finish as high as third.
However, their tournament runs came to an end they each suffered their second loss Saturday at the Salina Bicentennial Center.
Ferro, a senior, got within one win of a medal round when he defeated Chanute’s Chase Cole 9-7 in Saturday’s 120-pound opener.
His shot at a medal was denied, though, as he dropped a 4-0 decision to Prairie View’s Kaleb Konitzer in the next round.Ferro finished the season with a 17-13 record.
McCleary, a sophomore, was eliminated in his first match on Saturday — a 5-3 loss to Buhler’s Scott Whitson in 145-pound competition. McCleary ended the season at 27-18.
Both Bobcats needed three straight wins to reach a medal round and four straight to finish third in their respective weight classes.
The duo bounced back from first-round losses and avoided elimination with consolation victories on Friday.
Ferro suffered an 18-3 loss to Colby’s Dustin Reed in the opener, but responded with a 3-1 victory over Circle’s Zeb Elson. McCleary lost 6-0 to Colby’s Quade Woofter, but regained his composure and handed Wellington’s Jason Haydon a 12-4 loss.
