Early surge lifts BLHS boys past Sumner Academy
Colin Murphy made six 3-pointers in the first half of Wednesday’s game against Sumner Academy in leading Basehor-Linwood to a 74-66 victory.
His 20-point first half performance propelled Basehor-Linwood to a 41-20 lead at intermission. In addition, Ryan Murphy scored seven points and Ben Johnson scored eight as well in the half.
The three players combined for 64 of Basehor-Linwood’s points in the victory over Sumner in a game that was almost a blowout at halftime, but felt like a substate final in the second half as fans from both teams attempted to ice free throw shooters by stomping their feet and dancing around as the opponent attempted free throws.
Basehor-Linwood made free throws down the stretch, preventing Sumner from cutting the lead further.
After BLHS dominated the first half, Sumner slowly mounted a rally as senior guard Benny Parker scored 24 of his game-high 31 points in the second half.
In the third quarter, Sumner outscored Basehor-Linwood 24-21 and then outscored the Bobcats 22-12 in the fourth quarter.
Colin Murphy finished with 25 points and Ryan Murphy scored 20. Ben Johnson scored 19 points. The Bobcats' other scorers were Tanner Garver, 3; Ryan Shaffer, 3; Brad Waterman, 1; Chase Younger, 3.
Sumner was led by Parker who finished with 31 points. In addition, Marcus Allen finished with 16 points.
Basehor-Linwood next plays Bishop Ward on Friday at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
