The awards honor schools whose scores on state assessments in both reading and mathematics placed among the top 5 percent statewide. The schools also must have earned state Standard of Excellence honors in reading and math and must have met the Adequate Yearly Progress standard on reading and math assessments as well as graduation rate.
Elementary and middle/junior high schools were also honored as part of the fifth annual Governor's Achievement Awards, and 72 schools were honored in all.
