Bonner Springs man dies in 3-car accident on I-70
A three-car crash Saturday on Interstate 70 near the Kansas Speedway killed a Bonner Springs man.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred about 7:15 p.m. near the 110th Street exit when westbound traffic on I-70 was backed up from the Kansas Highway 7 exit. Robert Groves, 65 of Bonner Springs, was killed when his car was struck from behind by Toyota Camry driven by Virginia Vopata-Schumacher, 50, of Maple Hill, Kan.
The Camry pushed Grove’s Ford Focus into the car in front of him, a Honda Civic.
Vopata-Schumacher had just come over a hill when she reached the backed-up traffic, the Highway Patrol reported. She had two passengers in her car, a 13-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl.
None of the occupants of the Camry, nor the two occupants of the Civic, were injured.
Groves was taken to the University of Kansas Hospital, where he died. His passenger, Connie Groves, 58, also was taken to KU Hospital.
All vehicle passengers involved in the collision were wearing their seat belts.
