T-Bones fall to Winnipeg in series opener

July 31, 2012

— Getting runners on base wasn't an issue in the T-Bones' series opener against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. However, getting them across the plate proved a little more challenging.

Kansas City (38-32) stranded eight runners and couldn't cash in on late scoring opportunities in a 4-1 loss to the Goldeyes Tuesday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Neither team could get a run home through the first four innings, but Winnipeg (40-28) broke through when Amos Ramon led off the fifth with a solo home run. The Goldeyes got two more off KC starter Shaun Garceau in the sixth to push their lead to 3-0.

The T-Bones got on the scoreboard with a run in the home half of the sixth, but they squandered an opportunity to score at least two more runs in the inning. Catcher Trevor Coleman drove in designated hitter Lee Cruz with a double, then moved to third on a double by third baseman Enrique Cruz. That gave KC runners on second and third with just one out, but Winnipeg starter Ace Walker struck out the next two hitters to end the scoring threat.

"There was really no excitement from our end offensively," manager Kenny Hook said. "When we did get an opportunity, we didn't cash in. We had second and third with a chance to tie the game, then took two backwards Ks. Any time you do that with runners in scoring position, that's not good."

The Goldeyes got one more run off reliever Sean Toler in the eighth, and Kansas City failed to answer down the stretch.

Walker mowed down T-Bone hitters all night, allowing just one run on four hits in 8.1 innings. He picked up the win, improving to 6-3 on the season. Garceau also had a solid outing, allowing three runs and striking out six hitters in seven innings, but took the loss on the mound, dropping him to 6-3.

"I thought (Garceau) pitched well enough to win," Hook said. "Any time you give up three runs, that's a quality start. We just couldn't get anything going against their guy."

The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the T-Bones and leaves them three games behind the Wichita Wingnuts in the American Association Central. They'll try to even the series with Winnipeg when starter Josh Rainwater returns to the mound at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. Rainwater is coming off arguably his best outing of the season — a two-hit complete game July 26 against the St. Paul Saints.

"Josh is obviously coming off a great start," Hook said. "I look for him to give us another start like this. We've just got to compete and swing the bat and get some runs across."
