Sporting KC improves to 3-0, gains sole possession of conference lead
Don’t look now, but Sporting Kansas City is 3-0 and in sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.
Playing its second straight home contest, Sporting KC defeated FC Dallas (1-1-1), 2-1, on Sunday with the difference being a Kei Kamara goal in the 88th minute.
Graham Zusi assisted Kamara on the goal for the midfielder’s second assist of the night and an Major League Soccer-best fourth of the season.
Sporting KC’s other goal came from a Zusi feed to Aurelien Collin in the 49th minute. The team’s two goals erased a 1-0 deficit after FC Dallas’ Ricardo Gallar earned an unassisted goal in the 25th minute.
Sporting KC outshot FC Dallas 18-8 on Sunday, and had a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. Meanwhile, FC Dallas posed a stiff test between the posts as goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made seven saves, including a diving stop on Kamara’s penalty kick in the game’s 50th minute.
But Kamara would come through with the game-winner, his second goal of the young season, and Sporting KC is again among the class of the Eastern Conference.
Sporting KC hits the road to play Chivas USA at 8 p.m. on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on KSMO-TV.
