I-435 resurfacing project to close lanes
A resurfacing project on Interstate 435 in Johnson Drive may cause some traffic snarls beginning Thursday.
At 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, the project will begin on both northbound and southbound Interstate 435 between Midland Drive and the Kansas River Bridge, including the ramps located on the north side of Midland Drive, Shawnee Mission Parkway, Johnson Drive and Holiday Drive in Johnson/Wyandotte Counties.
Overall project work includes a chip seal on the shoulders only, ultra thin bonded overlay on mainlines and ramps, and permanent pavement markings.
Chip seal work will begin on Thursday, with one lane closed on both northbound and southbound I-435 during the daylight hours, Monday through Friday. In addition, there will be short-term ramp closures of 20-30 minutes per ramp during the chip seal application with no marked detours.
Then beginning on Friday, May 11, northbound and southbound I-435 will have two lanes closed in each direction between 7 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Monday through Friday with some occasional weekend work for completion of the overlay work on mainline lanes and ramps. There will also be short-term ramp closures during the overlay work. Marked detours will be provided during these ramp closures.
Advance message boards will alert traffic to the lane and ramp closures. There will be a posted 60 mph speed limit during working hours throughout the project duration. Updated traffic information for this bridge repair project can be viewed at ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp. Drivers should expect some delays, especially during peak morning/evening rush hours, and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.
APAC Kansas City, Kansas City, Mo., is the primary contractor on this bridge repair project with a total contract cost of $1.5 million. The scheduled completion date for the entire project is mid-June 2012, weather permitting.
