Cities to meet with Google Fiber officials
A week after the Bonner Springs City Council expressed its frustrations at being “ignored” in the expansion of Google Fiber, Bonner Springs Mayor Clausie Smith and Edwardsville Mayor John “Tiny” McTaggart were set to meet with Kansas City, Kan., Mayor Joe Reardon and Google officials Wednesday afternoon.
The meeting, set for 4 p.m., was after The Chieftain’s deadline, but Smith said he hoped to get some answers about when Bonner Springs and Edwardsville might see the service expand to their cities.
He said he feels the cities should have earned early consideration because it was the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., that first brought Google to the area.
“We’re part of the county, and that’s why we asked for the meeting,” Smith said.
Google is asking at least 10 percent of residents in communities where it will expand to preregister for the service. Could Bonner Springs and Edwardsville meet the minimum sign up requirements?
