Fliger’s 11th inning heroics give BLHS baseball 13-12 win at Lansing
Avery Fliger singled Zac Hevel home in the 11th inning to give the Basehor-Linwood baseball team a 13-12 extra innings victory at Lansing on Wednesday.
The Bobcats (1-1) had an 11-0 lead evaporate after the fourth inning as Wednesday’s Kaw Valley League matchup quickly became a hit parade — the two teams combined for 40 total hits.
BLHS also stole 14 bases in the game, with Joe Merino swiping five, Hevel stealing four and Zach Joyce three. Hevel stole three bases — including the Bobcats’ first run of the game — in the opening inning and later stole second in the 11th to get into scoring position.
The Bobcats built a 3-0 lead in the first inning. In addition to Hevel stealing home, Tanner Garver reached on a dropped third strike and was batted in by Fliger, who finished 2-for-6 with a double and an RBI. Drew Potter, who went 3-for-6 with 2 RBI, later batted in Fliger.
BLHS enjoyed considerable breathing room even after the Lions got on the board with a four-run fifth inning. But Lansing would tie with a seven-run seventh that altered the course of the game.
Seagar Smith, 2-for-6 with an RBI and a double, brought in Merino in the ninth inning for a brief 12-11 lead, but the Lions answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Extra play would continue until Fliger’s 11th inning heroics.
Both Garver and Hevel finished the day 3-for-7. Hevel scored two runs and Garver finished with a double and a team-high 3 RBI. Bryan Crowe finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Joyce and Merino tied for a team-high three runs scored.
The Bobcats will return to play at 4 p.m. Tuesday when they host Piper in league play.
