Bonner Springs senior Luis Gardea stole five bases in a doubleheader against Piper on Monday, putting him six away from breaking the school record entering this week’s Butch Foster Memorial Baseball Classic.

Piper swept BSHS, 16-6 and 8-7, to drop the Braves to 1-9.

After the Pirates picked up the opening win in six innings, the Braves maintained a 7-5 seventh-inning lead in the nightcap but were unable to close it out.

“The boys played game two hard and cleaned up a lot of the mistakes from game one,” BSHS coach Scott Lero said.

BSHS opens the Butch Foster Memorial Classic at noon against Paola at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
