BLHS boys survive, girls fall vs. Hayden

December 13, 2013

Senior Chase Younger scored 29 points and the Basehor-Linwood boys held off a furious comeback for an 81-76 win against Topeka-Hayden on Friday.

The Bobcats (2-1) entered the second half with a 36-23 lead and extended their advantage to 21 midway through the third quarter, but the Wildcats started chipping away at the deficit. A three-point play by Hayden's Jacob Head made it 70-64 with 2:39 left in the fourth, but BLHS maintained a two-possession lead the rest of the way.

Head and Marcus Meier had all but 10 of Hayden's points, scoring 40 and 26, respectively. Head, who scored 34 in the second half alone, broke Hayden's single game scoring record of 37 points.

Younger, who shot just 4-of-17 from the field in a loss to Shawnee Mission South on Tuesday, was 7-of-11 and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line in Friday's victory. He was joined in double figures by fellow seniors JP Downing (16), Zach McNabb (14) and Tim Sanders (12).

BLHS will close out the 2013 portion of its schedule Tuesday at Kaw Valley League rival Bonner Springs.

The Basehor-Linwood girls trailed by 13 points after one quarter and couldn't overcome the slow start in their first loss of the season.

A 17-4 first-quarter run by Hayden — aided by several Bobcat turnovers — gave the Wildcats a 22-9 lead at the end of the opening period, and BLHS (1-2) failed to cut into the deficit before the break. The teams played even for most of the second half until the Wildcat lead reached 20 with less than four minutes remaining.

Sophomore Jenna Mussett led the Bobcats with eight points, while senior Victoria Smith and junior Madison McDowell each added seven. Hayden's Kirah Lohse led all scorers with 21 points.
