10 Years Ago: July 31, 2003

The Edwardsville City Council approved tax abatement for up to 10 years to establish a grocery store in the city.

The VFW announced plans to hold its annual horseshoe tournament. Gary Parker was chairperson of the event.

Basehor residents Frank and Marjorie Ziegler donated funds to allow the Basehor Police Department to purchase a heart defibrillator.

The Kaw Valley Relay For Life raised more than $68,000 for the American Cancer Society.

25 Years Ago: Aug. 4, 1988

The Basehor Centennial Committee was seeking submissions for a centennial book. Olive Carney was chairperson for the event.

The City of Bonner Springs approved a tax levy of 47.254 mills for 1989.

A statue was erected adjacent to the Bonner Springs Senior Center and Library. It was designed by the Bonner Springs High School drafting students and constructed by Southwest Steel Fabrication Co.

Jason Gibbons was promoted to vice president and Julie Green was named vice president-cashier at the First National Bank of Bonner Springs.

50 Years Ago: July 30-Aug. 2, 1963

Bonner Springs Chief of Police Elbert Woolf reported two incidents of vandals blocking streets in the city.

The Rev. James Nelson was installed as pastor of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church.

The Bonner Springs Junior Chamber of Commerce held a successful “white elephant sale” raising more than $300.

Lee E. Weeks, Bonner Springs’ lawyer, was inducted as a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers in Chicago.

100 Years Ago: July 31, 1913

Lake Forest defeated Bonner Springs, 17-14, despite a home run hit by Langford.

The Mayfield Mill was back in operation after a new gasoline engine was installed. Mr. Mayfield said he expected to produce at least 50 barrels of flour daily.

The Wyandotte County Commission gave approval to improvements on the wagon road to Edwardsville.

Basehor defeated Piper in a disputed baseball game. Piper complained about some members of the Basehor team. The score was not given.
