Basehor-Linwood and Bonner Springs unveiled their 2012-13 student-athletes of the year this week, each honoring a senior boy and girl who each have been a fixture within the school’s athletic department each season.

Seniors Drew Potter and Jamie Johnson received the honor for BLHS, and BSHS named Jonathan Blackwell and Haley Hoffine its student-athletes of the year.

Potter is nearing the end of his athletic career as a Bobcat, having played football, competed in powerlifting and also baseball. He earned first-team All-Kaw Valley League honors after leading BLHS with 1,123 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in 2012, and will continue his football career at the University of South Dakota. As a powerlifter, Potter took home second place in the hang clean event.

Johnson, meanwhile, broke a BLHS girls basketball program record for three-pointers made, just one year after returning from a broken arm. She was also part of the Bobcats’ 2012 volleyball team that made it back to the state tournament. Earlier this year, Johnson signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Cowley County Community College.

Blackwell is narrowing his college choices to continue his wrestling career, something he began in earnest while at BSHS. Blackwell capped a 35-1 senior season by winning the Class 4A state championship at 152 pounds in February. Soon after, he exchanged a singlet for a baseball uniform and can occasionally be found on the mound pitching for the Braves. Back in the fall, Blackwell stepped up as running back for the Braves late in the season.

Hoffine has also kept herself busy each season as a Brave. The senior plays volleyball, basketball and soccer at BSHS. She was a big part of the Braves’ first state tournament basketball team and turned heads with a midcourt buzzer-beater at halftime at the beginning of her senior season. She was an All-Kaw Valley League selection in volleyball, too, and will look to lead the BSHS girls soccer team through regionals later this month. In April, Hoffine recorded a hat trick in a 10-0 win against Bishop Ward.
