Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign starts Monday

May 15, 2013

Basehor Police Department will join more than 140 other law enforcement agencies across the state for the Click It or Ticket campaign starting Monday and continuing to Sunday June 2.

Drivers will see increased police presence and can expect strict enforcement of the Safety Belt Use Act and the Child Passenger Safety Act.

Officers can stop vehicles and issue tickets if they observe front seat occupants, or children under the age of 14, riding without proper restraint. Occupants ages 14 and over are cited individually.

Children under the age of four must be secured in a child safety seat and children ages four through seven must be securely belted into an approved booster seat unless taller than 4 feet 9 inches or heavier than 80 pounds.

The only thing the police do in this city is hide in a driveway to hand out tickets. I would like to see them actually worry about crime than spend even more time trying to extort money out of people. The seat belt compliance rate is 85% in Kansas. The people who aren't wearing them won't. Go sit in any car manufactured in the last 30 years without a seat belt: flashing lights and constant beeping. The reminder is built into the car; we don't need to waste money paying cops to do it too. I'd be happy with a few less drug houses in the old part of town, but there's no money to be made in that. Clck it or Ticket is about raising a quick windfall for the city hidden in the guise of safety. Not interested.
