Area soccer players earn All-State recognition
Basehor-Linwood's Zach Ferguson made his presence felt on the soccer field early and often in 2013. The Bobcat junior's efforts didn't go unnoticed, as he recently received some recognition from coaches across the state.
Ferguson, a midfielder and All-Kaw Valley League first-team selection, was named to the Class 4-1A All-State second team, released this week by the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association.
Ferguson led the Bobcats with 12 goals — four in postseason play — and recorded eight assists in coach Erik Jones' first season at the helm. Ferguson helped BLHS to a 6-12 record in 2013, including an 8-2 regional play-in victory against Maur Hill Mount Academy.
Bonner Springs was also represented on the All-State teams, as senior defender Austin Schuler earned a second-team selection. Schuler, who also joined Ferguson on the All-KVL first team, led the Braves to a 9-8 season after winning just one game a year ago.
BSHS senior forward Robert Glenn was also recognized, as he wrapped up his career with an honorable mention.
Tonganoxie forward Asher Huseman and Piper midfielder Jeremy Wilson were the KVL's only 4-1A first-team selections. Piper's Jared Davis (midfielder) and Luke Long (defender) joined Glenn as honorable mentions.
Mill Valley had three selections to the 5A team in first-teamers Jack Lopez (midfielder) and Cody Knight (defender) and honorable mention Bailey Weeks (defender).
