Football playoff scenarios: Basehor-Linwood

October 28, 2013

BASEHOR-LINWOOD (3-5, 1-1 Class 4A District 2)

Current standings

Tonganoxie, 2-0 (+22)

Basehor-Linwood, 1-1 (+20)

Jeff West, 1-1 (0)

Perry-Lecompton, 0-2 (-42)

Games of interest: Jeff West at Perry-Lecompton, Piper at Bishop Ward

The Bobcats staved off elimination and ultimately kept all district teams in playoff contention with a 37-16 win Friday at Perry-Lecompton. They can give themselves a shot at a playoff bid — or perhaps a district title — with a win Thursday at rival Tonganoxie. The Chieftains improved to 2-0 in district play Friday with a 34-33 win at Jeff West.

The District 2 champion will host the District 1 runner-up and vice versa. Piper and Bishop Ward are both 2-0 in the District 1 standings and have earned playoff bids. The district champion will be decided Thursday when the Pirates travel to BWHS.

If Basehor-Linwood and Perry-Lecompton win: BLHS can win the district with a victory and a Jeff West loss. In that situation, the Bobcats would be district champs and would host the Piper-Ward loser in the bi-district round on Nov. 5. Tonganoxie would be the runner-up and would play the Piper-Ward winner on the road.

If Basehor-Linwood and Jeff West win: Wins by the Bobcats and Tigers would leave all teams but Perry-Lecompton at 2-1 in district play, and the 21-point tiebreaker would go into effect to decide the champion and runner-up.

In the event that all three teams finish 2-1 and are tied in marginal points, the team with the most overall wins against teams in Class 4A or larger would win the district, and the team with the next-highest win total would be runner-up. In that situation, Tonganoxie would be district champion with seven qualifying wins, but Basehor-Linwood and Jeff West would each have four qualifying wins. Three of the Tigers' victories are against 3A teams and wouldn't count. The next tiebreaker would be win percentage against teams in Class 4A or larger, giving JWHS (4-2, .667) the edge over BLHS (4-5, .444).

If Tonganoxie and Jeff West win: A win Thursday would give THS a district title, and a Jeff West win would give the Tigers the runner-up spot.

If Tonganoxie and Perry-Lecompton win: A PLHS victory would force a three-way tie for second in the district standings, as all teams but Tonganoxie would be 1-2. In that case, the 21-point tiebreaker would go into effect to decide the runner-up.
