— Jahron McPherson's runner as time expired propelled the Basehor-Linwood boys to a 100-99, double-overtime win in Kaw Valley League action Monday at Piper.

The Bobcats, who hadn't played since defeating De Soto on Jan. 31, got a chance to win when Piper's Brendon Rogers missed a pair of free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining in the second extra period. McPherson, who also hit a shot to force double overtime, drove the length of the floor and let a shot go just inside the 3-point line. The ball sliced through the net as the buzzer sounded, and McPherson was mobbed by teammates.

BLHS (11-2, 6-1 KVL) opened up a 73-64 lead with 1:39 left in regulation, but the Pirates (8-4, 4-3) clawed back to within three with 16.8 sections remaining. Luke Long, who led PHS with 22 points, drained a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left to force a 79-79 tie, and the game went to overtime.

The teams went back and forth in the first overtime, and Piper clung to an 86-84 advantage with 13.1 seconds left. McPherson came up big on the next possession, splitting the defense for a layup with less than five seconds left to send the game to another four-minute period. The Pirates took a 99-96 lead with 17.4 seconds left and had several chances to extend their lead a the free throw line, but McPherson scored the game's final four points to give BLHS the win.

A back-and-forth first half left the Bobcats with a 34-33 halftime lead, but they used an 11-0 run — seven by Zach McNabb — to open up a 47-39 lead late in the third quarter. They seemingly started to pull away when the gap grew to 11 early in the fourth, but Piper outscored BLHS by a 30-19 margin in the final 6:35 of regulation.

Despite entering the second half scoreless, McNabb led all scorers with 24 points. Patrick Muldoon added 22, but spent overtime on the bench after fouling out late in the fourth quarter. Piper's Dominique Williams complemented Long's 22-point effort with 21 of his own. In total, the Bobcats and Pirates had 10 double-digit scorers.

With the win, BLHS maintained sole possession of second place in the KVL standings. It trails Lansing by one game, while Piper fell into a three-way tie for third with Tonganoxie and Mill Valley. The Bobcats entered the game ranked No. 3 in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association's Class 4A poll, while the Pirates were No. 4.

Both teams will continue KVL action Tuesday. BLHS will travel to Tonganoxie, while Piper will host Turner.
