— The Basehor-Linwood boys trailed Class 5A Lansing by a single point early in the fourth quarter, but couldn't find an answer for a late Lion run in a 64-52 loss Friday at Earl W. Johnsmeyer Gymnasium.

BLHS (6-2, 5-1 Kaw Valley League) entered the final period trailing by six, but scored five quick points to make it 45-44 with 7:19 remaining. The Bobcats had a chance to take the lead after forcing a turnover on the ensuing possession, but Tim Sanders was called for a travel under the basket. The travel, an illegal screen and an offensive foul gave the Lions (9-0, 6-0) a chance to give themselves some breathing room. The string of Bobcat mishaps ignited a 14-0 LHS run that ultimately put the game out of reach.

BLHS clung to a 13-11 lead at the end of the opening period and extended its advantage to eight midway through the second. Lansing had an answer, though, scoring nine straight to take a 25-24 lead. The teams traded scores for the rest of the half, and the Bobcats went into the locker room ahead 30-29.

Patrick Muldoon led BLHS with 18 points and Jahron McPherson added 10. Air Force signee Joe Schneieder paced Lansing with a game-high 21 points. He was one of three Lions to reach double figures.

With the win, Lansing takes over sole possession of first place in the KVL standings. The teams will meet again Feb. 18 in Basehor. BLHS will return to the floor Monday when it hosts the annual Bobcat Invitational. They'll open tournament play against St. Joe Benton (Mo.) at 7:30 p.m.

BLHS GIRLS 55, LANSING 48

The Bobcat girls saw a double-digit lead shrink to six points in the final minutes, but held on for their fourth straight league victory.

After opening the fourth quarter with a 44-32 lead, BLHS (6-2, 5-1 KVL) allowed Lansing (3-6, 2-4) to get within single digits for the first time since the first quarter. The Bobcats seemingly found their footing when they stretched an eight-point lead back to 11 with less than three minutes left, but LHS scored five straight to make it 53-47 in the final seconds. That's as close as it got, though, as BLHS iced the game at the free throw line.

Coach Jason Tatkenhorst's squad wasted little time taking control, as it sprinted out to a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The teams went back and forth for the duration of the second quarter, and BLHS took a 33-20 lead into the break.

Amber Garver scored a game-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Marriah Clayton added 10 in the win. Lansing's Madelyn Moya was the only Lion to reach double figures with 11 points.

Like the boys, the BLHS girls will open Bobcat Invitational play Monday. They'll take on Pembroke Hill (Mo.) at 6 p.m. Complete tournament brackets are available here.
