January 29, 2014

The Basehor-Linwood wrestling team put together a dominant performance in a non-league dual Tuesday, recording six pins in a 66-16 victory at Eudora.

Corbin Nirschl (113 pounds), Justin Phillips (132), Cory McCleary (160), Steven Struzzo (170), Zach Holtgrewe (182) and Zack Carter (195) each pinned their opponents. Six of Eudora's 16 points came via forfeit, as the Bobcats were open at 106 pounds. The Cardinals didn't have wrestlers at 126, 145, 152, 220 or 285.

The Bobcats were also in tournament action over the weekend, taking fifth place at the Paola Invitational. Phillips and Shayn Morris (113) led the charge, finishing second and third in their respective weight classes.

BLHS will continue dual action Thursday when it welcomes Kaw Valley League opponent Tonganoxie to town. The teams will open at 6 p.m. with 12 kids club matches, then Bobcat seniors will be recognized in a ceremony before the start of varsity competition.

The varsity dual will feature three wrestlers currently ranked in the Class 4A poll. Nirschl, now 16-0, held onto the top spot at 106. Meanwhile, Tonganoxie's Asher Huseman claimed the top spot at 152 pounds for the first time this year, and Clayton Himpel is ranked third at 132.
