Kansas: Insurance commish officially opposes Brownback re-election

January 30, 2014

— Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger on Wednesday went public in her opposition to the re-election of fellow Republican Gov. Sam Brownback.

Praeger, a longtime moderate Republican from Lawrence, is one of six sponsors of a new bi-partisan coalition called "Reroute the Roadmap," which is a reference to Brownback's 2010 campaign when he called his policy objectives a Roadmap for Kansas.

In a video released by the group, Praeger says, "We looked at the roadmap that the governor outlined when he took office, and when you look at where we're going today, we're going in the wrong direction.

"And it's just time to re-route the roadmap and to move us in a direction that we think will lead to prosperity for the state."

Praeger isn't running for re-election to the statewide office of insurance commissioner.

In addition to Praeger, appearing in the video are Jill Docking, who is running as lieutenant governor with likely Democratic gubernatorial nominee Paul Davis; former U.S. Sen. Sheila Frahm, a Republican; former legislator and Kansas Republican Party chairwoman Rochelle Chronister; Kansas Democratic Party Chairwoman Joan Wagnon, and state Sen. Laura Kelly, D-Topeka.

Clayton Barker, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, said Praeger is a supporter of the Affordable Care Act signed into law by President Barack Obama, and commonly called Obamacare.

"Commissioner Praeger and the other five are big fans of ObamaCare, and advocates of ObamaCare know Paul Davis is their candidate. We're confident a strong majority of Kansans believe differently," Barker said.
