Bobcat boys shake slow start to win sub-state opener
When the Basehor-Linwood boys went into the locker room at halftime Friday against Tonganoxie, they trailed by nine points. Then, Chase Younger took over.
Younger scored 16 of his 18 game-high points after the break Friday and BLHS advanced to the Class 4A-1 sub-state finals with a 63-49 win against their Kaw Valley League rival at BLHS.
The Bobcats (18-3) came out of the locker room on the wrong side of a 30-21 score, but roared back to take a seven-point lead at the end of the quarter. A pair of 3-pointers by Younger headlined a 14-4 run that covered more than five minutes of gave time and gave BLHS its first lead since midway through the first half.
His second trey made it a 10-point game early in the fourth, and Tonganoxie (9-12) never threatened to go back in front.
"He tried to do that a little bit in the first half, but nobody else was really doing a whole lot," coach Mike McBride said of Younger. "When everybody got on the same page and started working hard, he started getting more open."
McBride's squad opened up a 10-6 lead after one quarter, but THS reeled off a 19-2 run to take a 25-12 advantage late in the second. Jack Dale found his way to the rim several times during the scoring burst, finishing with 13 first-half points.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats shot less than 31 percent from the field in the first half, allowing the Chieftains to go into intermission with a three-score advantage.
"We were trying to do a lot of individual stuff," Younger said. "We basically needed to pick it up and start playing together as a team."
Younger, fresh off a 42-point outing in the team's regular-season finale, again led the Bobcats in scoring. Patrick Muldoon added 12 points in the win. Dale led Tonganoxie with 15, but was limited to just two in the second half on a layup in the final minutes. McBride credited Bobcat guard Jahron McPherson for keeping Dale from heating up again after the break.
The win sets up a sub-state finals meeting with Piper (15-6) on Saturday. PHS reached the finals with a 77-59 win Friday against Atchison. Saturday's game will begin immediately following the girls sub-state final, which will tip at 6 p.m.
The Bobcats swept a pair of regular-season meetings with the Pirates, but both games came down to the wire. BLHS needed a buzzer-beater to win a 100-99, double-overtime game Feb. 10 in Kansas City, Kan., then held on for a 72-68 in Feb. 25 at home.
"We need to come out and play our game, just like we did tonight in the second half," Younger said.
