LCHS shelter permit approved

August 7, 2015

The Leavenworth County Humane Society is moving forward with plans to build and operate a "no kill" pet animal shelter open to all Leavenworth County residents.

The Lansing City Council Thursday approved the conditional use permit to allow LCHS to build and operate the shelter in the Lansing Business Center through 2020. LCHS will then have to renew the permit.

LCHS President Crystal Swann Blackdeer noted that the organization will offer contracted shelter services to cities that do not currently have their own shelter for intake of strays and relinquished pets. The organization will also offer sheltering services under contract to the unincorporated county, whose animal control authority is the Sheriff’s Department.

The shelter will be built to house 60 cast and 50 dogs. LCHS is still preparing to begin its capital campaign to fund the shelter, and the architecture firm that prepared a site plan and floor plan for the shelter estimated that the building and furnishings would total $3.5 million.
