BLHS boys beat Piper; Lady Bobcats struggle

December 15, 2015

— The Basehor-Linwood boys started Monday’s game against Kaw Valley League rival Piper by playing some great basketball. And then the Bobcats got scorching hot from outside, leaving Piper burned in an 81-26 victory.

Piper had tied the game at four early in the first quarter, but the Bobcats (3-0 overall, 2-0 KVL) held Piper without a point for almost eight minutes and took a 29-4 lead with 5:43 left in the first half.

Believe it or not, the worst was yet to come for the Pirates.

Basehor-Linwood finished the half by scoring 24 points in five and a half minutes — a pace of almost 170 points for an entire game — and 35 points overall in the quarter.

The Bobcats scored 55 points in the first half, which included ten 3-pointers, an array of drives and dunks and a 9-for-9 free-throw shooting performance.

“Our defense was so awesome,” McBride said. “When you get focused on defense, and then you’ve got eight or nine guys on the floor who can do all three things — dribble, drive and shoot — you’re going to do some nice things. If they come that focused on defense every single night, you can expect somebody to make shots. We just had one of those nights where everybody was making them.”

Senior Jack Dale led Basehor-Linwood with 26 points, 18 of which came in the first half and included four 3-pointers. Senior Jahron McPherson scored 14, all in the first half.

The Bobcats’ second half didn’t have the same offensive explosiveness, but the team continued to dominate at both ends of the floor.

McBride gave credit to the work ethic of the senior class.

“These seniors have put in so much time in their lives,” he said. “They love to be in the gym. We gave them the option of one day in the gym over the weekend, and they chose both. They want to be in the gym every single day.”

Senior Brock Gilliam added 11 points as 11 of the 13 Bobcats who played scored. Juniors Terrel Hall and Jordan Goodpaster scored six points each for Piper.

Basehor-Linwood will play Friday at Tonganoxie, the team’s final game before the holiday break.

Piper girls dominate early against BLHS

Piper senior Jessica Wayne scored 16 points in the first quarter as the Lady Pirates jumped out to a 33-1 lead on their way to a 65-32 victory against the Basehor-Linwood girls on Monday night.

Wayne finished the first half with 20 points and had 30 after three quarters. She did not play in the fourth. In addition to her scoring, Wayne led the Lady Pirates’ pressure defense, which forced several first-half turnovers and led to easy baskets.

Senior Ryann Smith scored all 12 of her points in the second half as the Bobcats (0-3 overall, 0-2 Kaw Valley League) outscored Piper 27-20. Sophomore Katie Yankovich had four points in the second half to help the blowout from getting worse.

The Bobcats trailed 45-5 at halftime, with senior Nicole Rutherford scoring all of Basehor-Linwood’s points.

Junior Maya Morrow finished with nine points for Piper, and freshman Ryan Cobbins scored six.

The Bobcats play their first road game of the season Friday night at Tonganoxie.
