Basehor-Linwood wrestlers take third in KVL
Tonganoxie The Basehor-Linwood wrestling team took third place at the Kaw Valley League championships on Saturday at Tonganoxie High School, finishing behind Mill Valley and Lansing, respectively.
The Bobcats, ranked fourth in the state in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, were led by Cody Phippen, Corbin Nirschl, Jon Trowbridge and Dominic Foster, who all finished the day at the champions of their respective weight classes.
Phippen, who is ranked No. 1 in the state at 102 pounds, defeated Mill Valley’s Dylan Gowin in the finals and improved to 30-2 this season.
Nirschl, who is ranked No. 1 in the state at 120 pounds, defeated Bonner Springs’ Collin Wallar in the finals and improved to 27-1 this season.
Trowbridge, who is ranked No. 2 in the state at 126 pounds, defeated Bonner Springs’ D.J. Ballard in the finals and improved to 22-5 this season.
Foster defeated Lansing’s Brian Orkwis in the finals of the 220-pound division and improved to 10-12 this season.
T.J. Williams took second place in the 152-pound division, losing to Mill Valley’s Bryan Burnett in the finals. Williams is 23-14 this season.
Alex Bejarano took third place in the 182-pound division, defeating Piper’s Kalin Fergus in the third-place match. Bejarano is 26-13 this season.
Jon Kraus finished fourth in the 195-pound division, losing to Bishop Ward’s Francisco Aguilar in the third-place match. Kraus is 14-9 this season.
Paul Frith took fourth place in the 285-pound division, losing to Lansing’s Khalil Austin. Frith is 3-16 this season.
