No. 2 Basehor-Linwood takes down Mill Valley
Basehor The Basehor-Linwood boys basketball team wrapped up an undefeated regular season with dominating defense in a 55-31 victory at Mill Valley on Friday.
The Bobcats, No. 2 in Class 4A-I, held Mill Valley to 14 points in the first half and held the Jaguars to two points in the first 5:25 seconds of the fourth quarter as they pulled away for good.
“Our help defense was better,” Basehor-Linwood coach Mike McBride said. “Our dribble lane defense was a lot better. We were reading things, and our rotations were better. All the things that we’ve worked on finally came out tonight.”
Carson Fliger finished with 23 points for the Bobcats, who improved to 20-0 overall and 14-0 in Kaw Valley League play. The senior forward had 10 points in the third quarter, and eight of his points came directly off his offensive rebounds.
“He played well, and he played angry sometimes last year,” McBride said. “I told him at the Lansing game that's what he needed to get back to — playing angry basketball. He had spirit. We hope this is the Carson that's here to stay.”
Mill Valley briefly cut the lead to 10 points in the third quarter, thanks in part to a pair of 3-pointers by Logan Koch, who led the Jaguars with 12 points. Pat Muldoon added 13 points for the Bobcats.
Even with the loss, Mill Valley (12-8, 10-4) finished in second place in the KVL thanks to Lansing’s loss to Piper.
Both schools start sub-state play next week. Mill Valley will start play Thursday in a Class 5A in a group that includes Harmon, Turner, St. James Academy, Blue Valley Southwest, Blue Valley West, St. Thomas Aquinas and Pittsburg.
The Bobcats will start play in a group that includes Piper, Sumner Academy and Tonganoxie.
