The Mill Valley girls celebrated Senior Night and their third league title in the last four seasons by defeating Basehor-Linwood 47-36 Friday at home.
Senior Jabria Leggett led all scorers with 15 points, and Catie Kaifes and senior Lexie Myers added 13 points each for No. 6 state-ranked Mill Valley, which improved to17-3 overall and 13-1 in the Kaw Valley League.
Basehor-Linwood (7-13, 6-8) didn’t make things easy. The Lady Bobcats trailed 30-29 with five minutes left in the game, but a driving layup by Leggett started Mill Valley, No. 6 in Class 5A, on a 17-6 run that closed out the game.
Madison McDowell had 13 points for the Lady Bobcats, who kept the game close in the first half thanks to a tough defense that forced 12 Mill Valley turnovers.
Basehor-Linwood led 16-13 before the Lady Jaguars ended the half on a 10-0 run. Neither team scored for the first five minutes of the second half, but Zailey DeLeon’s steal, layup and free throw started the comeback for Basehor-Linwood, who held Mill Valley to five points in the third quarter.
Both schools start sub-state play next week. Mill Valley will start play Thursday in a group that includes Harmon, Turner, St. James Academy, Blue Valley Southwest, Blue Valley West, St. Thomas Aquinas and Pittsburg.
The Bobcats will start play in a group that includes Piper, Sumner Academy and Tonganoxie.
