Phippen named three-time All-American

July 30, 2015

Cody Phippen is a three-time All-American. Just let that sink in for a moment because the sentence you just read was a declaration of United States youth wrestling history.

Phippen, who will be a sophomore at Basehor-Linwood High School this fall, certainly left his mark at the Cadet and Junior Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota, last week.

He came away with third-place finishes in the Cadet Greco-Roman and Junior Freestyle tournaments and took seventh place in the Cadet Freestyle tournament, earning All-American accolades in each bracket. No other wrestler has accomplished that feat since the Freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments were combined into one.

“I can't say enough about this young man and the work that he has done,” BLHS coach Tyler Cordts wrote on Twitter. “This is an amazing feat for an amazing young man.”

Phippen, who won the silver medal at the Class 4A wrestling championships earlier this year, said his most recent accomplishment was procured by his training regimen. According to his profile on TrackWrestling.com, Phippen now has an overall record of 92-17. He’s won 37 matches by technical fall, 15 by pin and eight by major decision.

“I’ve just been sticking to my training every day and working harder,” said Phippen, who went a combined 17-4 last week. “I went against some tough competition, but it was fun because I got to wrestle a lot and I got better with each match.”

With his summer season now in the books, Phippen will continue training for the high school competition. He went 37-3 in his freshman season and is hoping to capture his first state title next February.

“My goal,” he said, “is to go undefeated.”
