The Edwardsville Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a special fundraising event next week, aimed at assisting local youth through Children’s Mercy Hospital of Kansas City.
The department’s Gold Glove Week will take place June 8-12, concluding next Friday with a special awards ceremony and cookout at Edwardsville City Park.
The color gold is used to show support for childhood cancer, which will serve as the primary focus for the fundraiser. Playing perfectly into the world of baseball, the color will be prevalent throughout the week as gold bases will be used during all youth baseball, softball and t-ball games.
Umpires will also don uniforms with the Gold Glove Week logo, and water bottles with the Gold Glove Week logo will be sold during games. Parents and fans are encouraged to wear gold out to the games as well.
Silent auctions will be held all week long, with autographed baseballs from former Major League Baseball players Steve Garvey, Mark Grudzielanek, Frank White, Amos Otis, Willie Wilson and Bret Saberhagen, all of which were Gold Glove winners during their playing days. Many other items will also be available to bid on.
Royals Hall of Famer Frank White will be in town on Friday, hosting a charity signing from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Edwardsville City Park. Prices for the signing are $15 for one item and $20 for two items.
Friday will also include a skills competition, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Edwardsville City Park. That event will feature a DJ, vendors and the continuation of the silent auction.
The day will conclude with a cookout from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., a special guest speaker, Bill Severns, at 7 p.m. and an awards ceremony at around 7:30 p.m. Severns is a former major league player and was once teammates with current Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost.
