May 27, 2015

Club/organization name: Basehor-Linwood Assistance Services or BLAS (pronounced “blaze”)

Established: BLAS was incorporated in 1994 to serve the residents of USD 458.

How it started: BLAS was started by an elementary teacher and elementary counselor in the USD 458 school district when they saw some of their students were in need of basic essentials in order to succeed at school.

Number of members: BLAS has 14 member/volunteers and a Board of Directors that consists of 5 of these members.

Mission statement: “Making a difference in the lives of our neighbours through financial assistance and volunteer commitment.” We feel strongly about improving the quality of life for many in our community. We will continue to work very hard to make a difference!

Interesting fact: BLAS had an Open House in October 2014 to celebrate 20 years of serving the community. BLAS is a Leavenworth County United Way agency and a member of the Basehor Chamber of Commerce.

Who can join: BLAS welcomes new members! We only ask that you be a resident living within the boundaries of Basehor-Linwood USD 458.

Membership dues: BLAS does not collect dues. We have no overhead cost or paid positions.

Meeting frequency: BLAS has meetings in January, April, August and October. They are held at the food pantry, which sits behind the Basehor United Methodist Church.

People it benefits: BLAS coordinates a food pantry that is open on Thursday evenings from 6 to 7. We provide food donations, monetary support and members volunteering their time. BLAS also provides monetary assistance for utilities and rent for eligible family clientele. Holiday assistance is given to families through our “Adopt-A-Family” program at Christmas. This includes holiday meals, gifts for family members, gift certificates and clothing. BLAS provides food backpacks for elementary students who have been identified by the school as needing food when school is not in session. BLAS provides school supplies for students at any grade level.

Biggest fundraisers/events: The Adopt-A-Family program.
