Basehor VFW announces student contest winners

The Bob Wiley Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11499 of Basehor has announced its local winners of the VFW’s annual Voice of Democracy contest for high school students and Patriot’s Pen national contest for middle school students.
The Voice of Democracy requires a 3 to 5 minute oral essay with this year theme being “My Vision For America.” The Basehor post’s winner was Zachary Kamm, sophomore. Should he reach the national level competition, Kamm would compete for a $30,000 Voice of Democracy scholarship.
The Patriot’s Pen contest requires a 300-400 word essay designed to explore the patriotic theme, which this year is “What Freedom Means To Me.” The post members judge 426 entries this year. Sixth grade winners were Gracie Hermreck and Stasia Braswell. Seventh grade winners were Benjamin Bridges and Torrey Carmichael. Eighth grade winners were Mercedes Ballinas, Zoie Borders, Morgan Chandler, Tyler Farace, Ellie Massing and Taylor Newlin.
A total of $1,000 in scholarships was awarded to the winners.
