Kansas Supreme Court: State’s public school funding levels are unconstitutional

The Kansas Supreme Court said Friday the state’s current public school funding levels are unconstitutional. In the much-anticipated ruling, the court said Kansas’ poor school districts were harmed when the state made the decision to cut certain payments when tax revenues declined during the Great Recession.

Basehor council targets land for new city campus

The Basehor city council is offering to buy a plot of land to build a new city campus between the city park and the community library, potentially resulting in a trail system that could connect all three. The council has written a letter of intent to buy the land near the corner of 158th Street and Parallel Road for $325,000 from David Jenkins of Basehor Prairie Farms. The city has been saving money for capital improvements and has $1.5 million earmarked for the city campus project, which would include a new city hall, community center, police station and potentially an EMS station.

It’s difficult for Cassie Batesel to point to the exact moment she realized her passion for photography. It may have been joining the photo imaging class at Basehor-Linwood High School at the start of the year or it may have been simply snapping pictures of her own family. Either way, her photos were trying to tell her something and now, as just a freshman at BLHS, she is turning her new-foudn passion into a small business.
