Basehor Sentinel’s former sports reporter Andy Marso speaks about new book

Andy Marso hugged several emotional parents of former Basehor-Linwood athletes Saturday after signing copies of his recently published book. Marso didn’t completely recognize each of the parents but when he heard who their kids were, he immediately remembered them. Marso covered Basehor-Linwood High School sports as a part-time reporter for the Basehor Sentinel in 2004 when he contracted and nearly died from a meningitis infection.

State Sen. Tom Holland, D-Baldwin City, and Rep. Willie Dove, R-Bonner Springs, spoke about several “hot issues,” as Holland put it, Saturday in Basehor at the Basehor VFW Post 11499. On the list of hot issues was education funding, legislator pay, marijuana legalization and Common Core Education Standards.

Basehor doesn’t need full-time administrator, city council says

After more than two years without a full-time city administrator, Basehor’s city council thinks the city doesn’t need one, for now. The Basehor City Council agreed Monday night at their work session that the city doesn’t need to pay someone $100,000 to fill the role of a full-time city administrator and will move forward with current Interim City Administrator Lloyd Martley filling the role on a part-time basis indefinitely. The council was also in consensus that the city “has never run better,” as council member Travis Miles said.

Basehor-Linwood students collecting keys for charity

Students at Basehor-Linwood High School are turning those extra keys rattling in desk drawers and weighing down key chains into money for Ronald McDonald House Charity. Students in the BLHS Student Council and the National Honors Society (NHS) are collecting keys through Feb. 14 from the Basehor community to donate to Ronald McDonald House of Kansas City. Keys, particularly brass keys, are valuable recyclables that bring in as much as six-times more money per pound compared to aluminum.

Basehor-Linwood schools closed for second day, frigid temperatures to follow snow
