- The Bonner Springs boys shrunk a 16-point deficit to four in the second half, but couldn’t quite cap off the comeback in a 65-56 loss Wednesday in sub-state first-round action at Tonganoxie.

- Monday and Tuesday’s sub-state basketball games at Tonganoxie High have both been rescheduled for Wednesday due to impending inclement weather. The THS girls will play host to Sumner Academy at 5 p.m., and the boys will immediately follow against Bonner Springs.

Here’s hoping Thursday’s winter storm is the apex of the rest of the month’s snowfall, as 4A sub-state hoops are slated to tip off Monday — the same day another band of white stuff is said to sweep the area.
No matter the date, however, the seedings and pairings have been set. Let’s take a look at the sub-state chances for the Basehor-Linwood and Bonner Springs boys and girls basketball teams.

- Leading the Braves (16-3, 11-2) with 17 points was Julianne Jackson. Also scoring in double-figures were Anna Deegan with 12 points and Haley Hoffine and Abrise Sims, who scored 11 points apiece.

- They had their chances, but the Bonner Springs boys basketball team couldn’t quite capitalize on them as they fell to Bishop Ward, 40-37, in overtime Tuesday at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

- With 10 seconds left, down 49-48, senior Jamie Johnson drove to the basket but the ball rattled out. A scrum ensued for the loose ball and BLHS maintain possession on the jump ball. But the Pirates closed out the game with a pair of blocks and a steal. The scoreboard remained stagnant, the buzzer punctuating a bittersweet night.

- Juniors J.P. Downing and Zach McNabb made more than they missed from three-point range on Friday, each bookending the Bobcats’ victory. Downing led the Bobcats (11-8, 9-4 in the Kaw Valley League) with 17 points, hitting three three-pointers in first half. McNabb added 12 points, hitting two of his three three-pointers in the second half and going 3 of 4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

- The Basehor-Linwood basketball teams honored four athletes prior to their final home games of the season against Turner on Friday. The athletes provided leadership and set examples for future athletes in addition to immeasurable amounts of hard work and commitment.

- The Basehor-Linwood girls basketball team capped the home portion of their schedule and sent their three seniors, Jamie Johnson, Samantha Rutherford and Kara Stephens, out on a high note with a 62-35 win against Turner on Friday.

- The Jaguars (15-2, 10-1 in the Kaw Valley League) outscored the Braves, 20-8, in the second quarter and went off for another 29 points in the third quarter to hand BSHS (8-10, 4-8) a 71-41 defeat.
