St. Joseph (Mo.) Benton came out firing Monday against the Basehor-Linwood girls, and the combination of hot shooting and aggressive defense propelled Benton to a 70-40 victory against the Lady Bobcats in the first round the Basehor-Linwood Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Basehor-Linwood Coach Mike McBride wanted to see what would happen if 6-foot-7 Pat Muldoon played farther away from the basket in the Bobcats’ press defense. On offense, Muldoon knew he needed to stay closer to the basket. Both things happened Friday, as Muldoon scored 29 points, grabbed eight rebounds and led a pressure defense that blitzed host Turner 74-39.

The third quarter has caused all kinds of trouble for the Basehor-Linwood girls basketball team this season. But the Lady Bobcats (2-5 overall, 2-3 Kaw Valley League) flipped the script Friday night against Bishop Ward, outscoring the host Cyclones 15-3 in the third quarter before cruising to a 52-38 victory.

Basehor-Linwood and Tonganoxie each entered Thursday night’s game looking for its first victory of the season and momentum heading into the holiday break after playing many of the best teams in Class 4A. By the end of the night, it was the Lady Bobcats who gave themselves a much-needed boost by defeating Tonganoxie 56-28 in both teams’ final game of 2014.
